EPA and EGPE: Fostering intergenerational solidarity
A Festive Milestone in Paris
We believe that a whole-community approach is essential for the healthy development of our children. While parents are the primary educators, grandparents play a vital, complementary role in providing continuity, shared wisdom, and emotional roots.
We are delighted that this partnership was officially formalised on 25 April 2026 in the beautiful city of Paris. On the occasion of the EPA General Assembly, representatives from both organizations gathered to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). It was a moment of celebration and friendship, marking the start of a new chapter where we unite our voices to support families across Europe. This signing ceremony was a testament to our shared belief that family engagement is a global necessity for the 21st century.
Our shared vision
The 21st century presents unique challenges for families, from declining birth rates to the increasing complexity of balancing modern life with educational responsibilities. Our partnership is built on the conviction that strengthening the link between generations is a global necessity.
Together, EPA and EGPE are committed to:
- Fostering cooperation: Building stronger bridges between parents and grandparents at the European level to address modern societal challenges.
- Intergenerational learning: Promoting dialogue that ensures children benefit from both the innovation of the young and the experience of the older generation.
- Joint advocacy: Supporting policy positions that protect family rights, social cohesion, and a fair transition for future generations.
- Knowledge exchange: Sharing best practices and research to better support families across Europe.
Why this matters for parents
Research highlights that a warm, regular relationship with grandparents significantly improves a child’s mental and emotional health. Grandparents often serve as:
- a “pivotal” support system: Many grandparents provide essential childcare and financial solidarity, helping parents navigate the pressures of work and education.
- transmitters of memory: They connect our children to their family history and a broader European identity.
- stable role models: For children facing stress, a grandparent can be the constant, caring adult that fosters resilience.
Moving forward together
Starting in May 2026, EPA and EGPE will hold regular joint initiatives, including:
- Mutual representation in workshops and seminars.
- Collaborative digital content and newsletter exchanges to keep our members informed.
- Support for grassroots initiatives between national and local members of both organizations.
We invite our member associations and all parents to explore the resources provided by our partners at EGPE and join us in celebrating the vital role of the “pivotal generation” in our children’s lives.
